Spread the love

I’ve seen a lot of love recently on Twitter from people finishing U4, and decided to have a go too, playing the XU4 version, which to me is the closest to the experience I had, a long long time ago, when I played it on my Amiga. I just wanted to share the memory of that younger me, 1987-88-ish, on the verge of turning 18, and discovering this universe (U4 was at that time my first entry into the Ultima universe… with much more to come in the following years), and even though I realized that I was looking back at that time with a mixture of existential angst and rose-tinted glasses’ nostalgia, I just broke up and bawled like a baby when I (re)-discovered Cove and met the strangely familiar bard Paul and Linda. “I light a candle to our love, in love our problems disappear…But all in all we soon discover that one and one is all we long to hear!” I had some sort of enlightenment there and then, realizing that video games can transcend into something else than pure entertainment, and move people. Many turns later, the Codex opened up its infinite wisdom to me. And I still remember fondly the elatement I felt, late at night (or was it in the wee hours of the morning?). And the memory has stayed with me until today. It’s been a great ride. Thank you, Richard Garriott de Cayeux!
